LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools will be able to get more trained teachers in the classroom thanks to a big donation.

Class Act Federal Credit Union donated $450,000 in scholarship money to expand the Louisville Teacher Residency Program.

The program, a partnership between UofL and JCPS, helps graduates who didn't major in education get their master's and teaching certification in one year.

In return, those teachers commit to joining the staff at JCPS school in need of teachers.

"Effective teaching is the core of our mission, and the Louisville Teacher Residency Program is one of our most powerful tools to empower future teachers," JCPS Superintendent Brian Yearwood said.

During the residency year, teachers spend four days each week in JCPS classrooms, gaining hands-on experience.

Class Act Federal Credit Union has donated $1 million toward the program since it was created.
