LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police Officers Matthew Forbes, Garret Schmeltz and Kendrick Eaves were identified Monday as those involved in the fatal shooting of a man who the chief said charged at them with a knife.
All three officers, from LMPD's 3rd division, responded in the late evening hours of July 25 to a report of trouble at Yoel Napoles' home in the 6600 block of Eagle Wood Drive. Napoles' family said he called 911 on himself because he wanted medical help and was having hallucinations.
According to LMPD Interim Police Chief Paul Humphreys, once police arrived at the home, Napoles grabbed a knife and came at officers. He was ordered to drop the knife several times but refused.
Humphrey said the officers used tasers and rubber bullets to try to de-escalate the situation but said they didn't stop Napoles, who charged at officers before he was shot and killed.
The Public Integrity Unit is investigating the shooting, and LMPD is expected to release body camera footage in about 10 business days, which is standard procedure anytime an LMPD officer is involved in a shooting.
