LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's a bumpy road for drivers after last week's rain and snow left behind numerous potholes on area roads that can often cause significant damage to vehicles.

Gary Wilson with Tony's Brakes and Alignment said his shop has been busy making repairs to vehicles damaged by potholes.

"We're seeing a lot of tire and wheel damage and suspension damage," Wilson said.

Even when they're small, potholes pack a mean punch, often causing substantial damage.

"A simple pothole can end up costing you anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 worth of repairs," Wilson said.

Last week's unique weather pattern created the perfect storm for the potholes to pop up -- about a month early.

Drivers in Louisville can report potholes to the city via Twitter by using the hashtag "502Pothole." You can also call 311 or 574-5000, or use the city's online portal.

But who is responsible for repairing vehicles that sustain pothole damage?

"They'll have to contact 311, which then goes to the appropriate department," said Barry Clyde with Louisville MetroWorks. "They'll do an investigation and see if they qualify for a reimbursement."

If your vehicle was damaged on a highway or interstate, you'll need to contact the Kentucky Department of Transportation. A link on its website allows you to submit a claim for consideration. CLICK HERE to submit a claim.

"Your Preston Highways, your Westport, your Shelbyville Roads -- those type of roads and anything interstate is Kentucky Department of Transportation," Clyde said.

Hoosier drivers should reach out to the Indiana Department of Transportation for damage to their vehicles. CLICK HERE to download a form to file a claim.
