LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Fire paused to honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives protecting others.Ā
The department held its annual memorial ceremony at Jefferson Square Park on Thursday to honor fallen firefighters.Ā
This week marks Fire Prevention Week, and LFD leaders said this is an important part of raising awareness.Ā
Pointing to the statue in the center of the park, LFD Chief Brian O'Neill said, "four people on that wall are people that I served alongside of, that I fought fires with, and I want to remember them."Ā
O'Neill added, "I want to make sure the next generation of firefighters understands who they were and who they were to this community, to their family, and to us."
Louisville Fire also uses this week to educate the community about fire safety in their homes.Ā It also puts on training and programing throughout the year.
