LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Fire Department is looking for new recruits.Â
Anyone interested in joining the ranks can apply starting June 2. Applications will be accepted through July 4.Â
Starting pay is above $66,000 annually, and no college or previous experience is required. Many firefighters earn close to $80,000 after five years.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, a clean criminal record and a valid driver's license to join the team.Â
Louisville Fire Capt. Donovan Sims said the department intends to keep growing after celebrating its 167th birthday on June 1.Â
"We serve the city of Louisville at large from anything you can think of from house fires to structural collapse rescues and as we all know big bridge rescues ... we do it all," Sims said. "It is pretty cool to know that this history has been around for so long, and we are going to keep growing."
The department said it's looking to welcome people from all backgrounds who may be considering a career in firefighting.Â
"We want our department to look like our community," Sims said. "If you have the inkling, a thought that this is something you want to get into, apply. Don't wait."
Firefighters work 24 hours on duty, and then are off 48 hours on a continuous three-day rotation.
There are numerous benefits, including retirement eligibility after 25 years, paid vacation, tuition reimbursement, health insurance and more.Â
