LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Metro Police Department is still in the process of moving into their new downtown headquarters.

The new location is in the former AT&T building on West Chestnut Street, between Sixth and Seventh streets. The city cut the ribbon on he new headquarters last month. Not all LMPD employees have moved in yet. So far, mostly administrative staff have relocated.

LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said while it will take up to two more years to get everyone in the building, it will help make the department stronger.

"The fact that we'll have our force investigations unit right here in the same building with the legal staff and the command staff and working in the same building as people whose use-of-force cases they're reviewing and they can just walk to their office and get better," Humphrey said. "That's how improvement happens. Improvement is a collaborative effort. Being separated creates barriers to improvement and ultimately, I think you build culture better when you're in the same place."

Eventually, hundreds of police officers and LMPD staff will be in the building. But it'll still take more construction and more funding from the city.

Right now, the total price of the new headquarters is $70 million.
