River Road project road closed

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Progress continues to be made on Mitchell Hill Road in Fairdale, which closed a year ago after flooding severely damaged it.

WDRB reported in JanuaryĀ the geotechnical report that was needed before any repairs could be made toĀ Mitchell Hill Road, near Top Hill Road, was completed and yielded two repair options.

One option was to build a retailing wall, the less disrupted and preferred method, to stabilize the embankment. The other option was to reshape the embankment for stabilization, a much more complex plan.

In an District 13 update email Friday, Louisville Metro Councilmember Dan Seum Jr. said plans for the road, retaining wall and drainage are finished with MSD reviewing the drainage plans. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirmed no federal permits are needed.Ā

"We understand how important this section of road is to the residents who used it for daily travel and how disruptive its closure has been," Seum said in the email update. "Our goal is not just to reopen the road, but to make sure it's stronger and safer for years to come."

Seum also said the City of Louisville has secured the necessary easements from a nearby property owner and are being finalized to allow for construction, drainage work and future maintenance. In the meantime, the city's contractor is working on estimated costs and a construction timeline.Ā

Tree removal is set to start Monday, March 23, and construction should start soon after all approvals.Ā

Seum said the road is still expected to open mid to late this year, weather and approvals permitting.
