Police say Bullitt Co. student who brought gun to school was turned in by father

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a student who brought a gun to North Bullitt High School was turned in by his own father.

In a statement Monday morning, Hillview Police Chief William F. Mahoney declined to identify the student -- citing the fact that he is a minor-- but he did provide additional details that shed light about the incident, which was first made public on Friday.

Mahoney said it started Friday morning, when school officials called the parent to say that his son needed to be picked up at the school for "a personal matter."

At the time, school officials were unaware of the gun.

After the parent picked his son up and took him home, he noticed that a gun safe had been broken into and a firearm was missing, along with ammunition. The parent found the gun in his son's backpack.

Mahoney said the parent called police "immediately" -- and the boy has since been criminally charged and detained. He declined to identify the charges that were filed.

The Bullitt County school district said the student will be disciplined according to school policy, and that there was no information to suggest that the student was ever a threat to others. However, the district says it is still taking the incident seriously.

Mahoney said school officials fully cooperated with the investigation.

"We apologize that more information cannot be released at this time, but hope that this will help clear up any misinformation," Mahoney said in the statement.
