JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Sellersburg man found guilty of murdering his wife in April 2022 has learned his fate.

Mac Lewis was sentenced Thursday to 100 years in prison for murder and several other charges.

Lewis was convicted by a Clark County jury in October of killing his wife, Elizabeth Bennett Lewis, in front of her 11-year-old daughter. He was found guilty on several charges, including murder, attempted murder and three counts criminal recklessness.

It happened April 3 inside their home in Sellersburg. That's when Lewis shot and killed his wife, then shot at her daughter and the daughter's 10-year-old friend.

During the trial, jurors heard from the first officers on the scene as well as the victim's daughter and the daughter's friend. Police said the child was distraught, and her hands were covered with her mother's blood after the shooting.

Prosecutors described in opening statements how the victim's 11-year-old daughter witnessed her mother's murder and called 911.

After Lewis was found guilty, the family of Elizabeth Bennett Lewis said they were pleased with the outcome, but they aren't celebrating it.

During Thursday's sentencing, the judge heard from the victim’s daughters, her father, and Lewis even addressed the court. He never apologized for his actions and still maintains it was an accident. His attorneys have said Lewis will likely appeal the verdict.

"There's not a whole hell of a lot of happiness today in our hearts because there is one person not standing with us," Tony Bennett, the father of Elizabeth Bennett Lewis, said. "Because they'll never have her back, we will never have her back and that's the most unfair thing about this. While today we are pleased with the outcome, we are always going to grieve the loss of a beautiful life due to a senseless act of violence."

The defense claimed Lewis was threatening to kill himself, but the jury found him guilty of all the charges against him.

His attorney tried to argue the murder charge down to reckless homicide.

"Mac is looking at a whole lot more time than he would have had they made the decision that I told them I thought was probable," said Lewis' attorney, Mitchele Harlan.
