LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana pharmacy gave a behind the scenes look Monday at how it operates in honor of National Pharmacist Day.
Optum's full-service pharmacy in Jeffersonville has 99 team members who specialize in specialty medications.
The specialty medications require complex administration or monitoring, have a limited distribution or are high in cost.
Many of the prescriptions also have to be refrigerated or kept at a certain temperature.Â
"With the medications that we dispense being specialty, they're not something that even all pharmacists are necessarily experienced with, so the extra care that they take to ensure that our patients are safe and cared for, we appreciate," Laura Timberlake, director of Fulfillment Operations, said.
About 9,000 to 13,000 prescriptions are filled in one day. The Optum hub shipped 2.4 million prescriptions nationwide in 2025. Of those, 103,000 were shipped within the Hoosier state.
