LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hundreds of bowlers showed off their skills in a local tournament this weekend.

Nearly 500 bowlers competed in the Special Olympics Area 4 Bowling Tournament at Kingpin Lanes in Jeffersontown. Bowlers competed in several categories.

It was the first of three weekends of the bowling tournaments. Many of the athletes are returning to the tournament and want to have a good time.

"Some of our athletes will train and bowl, practice once a week, some twice a week, but in order to make it here they had to bowl at least eight games," said Kathy Marshall with Special Olympics of Kentucky.

Athletes and unified teams who win their division and some second-place finishers will qualify to compete in the State Bowling Tournament in Louisville on Dec. 7-8.
