LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- TSA says it’s ready for one of the busiest Thanksgiving travel periods in years as passenger numbers surge at Kentucky airports.

More than 17.8 million travelers are expected to be screened nationwide between Nov. 25 and Dec. 2. In Kentucky, TSA anticipates the biggest crowds the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after.

"TSA works closely with airlines and airports to ensure we are fully prepared for the increase in passengers around the Thanksgiving travel period," Ray Williams, the agency’s Federal Security Director for Kentucky, said in a news release.

Solid holiday foods can be carried on, but liquids or spreadable items larger than 3.4 ounces must go in checked bags.

Passengers must bring a REAL ID, passport or other approved identification. Children 17 and under can join an enrolled adult in TSA PreCheck lanes at no cost.

Travelers are urged to arrive early and take steps that speed up checkpoint times. Anyone with questions can get 24/7 help online.
