Vandalism at Shawnee Park leaves community members frustrated, asking for answers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Police are looking for the driver of a black Dodge Challenger who left rubber tire marks on a basketball court at Shawnee Park.

Louisville Parks and Recreation officials said between 6:30 and 7 a.m. on Wednesday surveillance footage shows the car driving onto the court and leaving the damage.

Officials also said the car was reported stolen that morning.

The court is home to the Dirt Bowl basketball tournament. Co-organizer Ravon Churchill said when he first saw it, he was heartbroken.

"I felt like somebody came in my house and just spray painted the walls," Churchill said.

Churchill said the court was redone a month ago and because it's made of rubber, he said you can't just power wash it.

Rory Gilvens has been coming to the Dirt Bowl for most of his life, and it's where his first job was.

"Why destroy something that is doing something good for our community? Just looking at it makes you feel like, 'wow, how could somebody do that?'" Gilvens said.

Although disheartening, Churchill said they won't let this keep them from hosting the Dirt Bowl for the rest of the summer.

"You can still score on that basket and that one and you can still dribble on this court. It's ugly, but the Dirt Bowl is a beautiful thing," Churchill said.

Churchill also tells us Louisville Police is looking into surveillance footage from the area.

Meanwhile, Louisville Parks and Recreation officials said they're figuring out how long it will take to repair the court.
