CORYDON, Ind. (WDRB) -- Water service was restored to most of Corydon, Indiana, as crews continue searching for a leak after a major water line break.

Town officials confirmed early Tuesday that there was a break on the north side of the system, and hundreds of people lost service overnight.

"Early this morning, we had about 600 people out of water. Right now we have that narrowed down to 100," said Town Manager Bruce Cunningham, around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The lack of water forced some businesses — like Farm House Kitchen off Quarry Road — to close its doors for the day.

Evan Trowbridge with T-N-T Custom Builders was disappointed. He said he usually comes into the restaurant every morning for breakfast.

"They have the best sausage, gravy and biscuits with three eggs over easy on top -- awesome breakfast," he said.

Trowbridge had to change his routine Tuesday, and ended up eating in Georgetown.

Tuesday afternoon after 3 p.m., Cunningham said crews were still working to find the leak.

He said a small leak has been discovered, but not the major one they're looking for. They have it narrowed down to about a half mile of water line off IN-337 by the Indian Creek Apartments and Rhoads Memorial Pool.

"The crews have been out since 2 a.m. looking for the leak," he said. "We have everybody back in service that can be in service."

Cunningham said the problem is that the water isn't spraying out from the top or being seen above ground, and it's difficult to find.

"The bad thing is we were losing 1,200 gallons a minute of water and it's going straight down," Cunningham said. "No water is coming to the surface. So, we had to call in a leak detection company from Indianapolis. They’re here on the scene and trying to help us find that leak underground. Once we find it we’ll dig it up and repair it."

Cunningham said he's not sure what caused the leak, but doesn't believe it had anything to do with the cold weather. He also said the repairs would be determined by the leak that's found.

"We don’t know until we dig it up. It may be a clamp that goes on the main," Cunningham said. "More than likely a small piece of main will have to be cut out and replaced. Once we find it, it’ll probably be two hours to repair it, but we haven't found it yet."

While service has been restored to most customers, Cunningham said around 100 were still waiting Tuesday afternoon. As of 3:27 p.m. he said crews had discovered a small leak, but not the major one they're looking for.

The town did immediately make arrangements to provide bottled water to residents without service, but Cunningham said, "If we go into late afternoon, we’ll have to make arrangements."

Cunningham said anyone who needs help should call the Corydon Town Hall at 812-738-3958.

As for other businesses in the area, Heritage Ford said its water was off when the shop opened Tuesday morning, but it came back on sometime between 10-10:30 a.m. Walmart was open, but a nearby AT&T store was closed.

The Harrison County Hospital gets its water from a different system was not affected. School districts in north and south Harrison county were also unaffected and classes went on as usual.

In a Facebook post, town officials said residents affected by the water outage can pick up water bottles at the Harrison Township Fire Department. There is also a shower that can be used "first come, first served." Officials expect more bottled water to be delivered Wednesday.
