LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The westbound lanes of Interstate 64 on the Sherman Minton Bridge, taking drivers from Louisville to Indiana, are back open.

The lanes were scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The top deck of the bridge closed Monday, Aug. 5, for nine days to allow crews to continue work on hanger cables, which officials for the Sherman Minton Renewal Project said is "the last of the large elements of this major rehabilitation project."

The closure was originally scheduled to start Aug. 2, but officials changed the date to avoid significant impacts to drivers over two weekends.

The project team anticipates another eastbound weekend closure in September to remove temporary platforms used for painting operations" as the end of the years-long rehabilitation project comes into view.

The ongoing construction is part of the Sherman Minton Renewal Project, which involves painting and rehabilitating the 61-year-old bridge. The project is anticipated to give the six-lane, double-decked span up to 30 more years of life.

The project is currently in it's fifth and final phase, which started in May and is "expected to last through late summer." It consists of replacing vertical hanger cables, replacing lighting, equipment installation, painting and adding permanent striping.

The original timeline for finishing the Sherman Minton Renewal Project was August 2023. The project website indicates the final phase of the project will wrap up by the end of the summer.
