LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Fireworks will light the sky Saturday night for Thunder Over Louisville. It's a spectacular show, and Louisville Fire and Rescue Capt. Donovan Sims joined WDRB Mornings Thursday to share how the department plans to keep everyone safe.

Sims said there will be extra staff on hand.

"We bring in at least 30-32 extra members," Sims said. "We backfill firehouses so we still have that safety aspect for the community on the streets. But then we're also staging for the Thunder event."

Sims said Marine One — a water rescue craft — will be deployed on the Ohio River, as well as three other boats to use for swift water rescues. The department is monitoring the water levels and will continue to do so until after the fireworks.

Thunder producers will check with the team to make sure divers are in the water and prepared if there are any mishaps during the air show.

ATVs and other utility vehicles will patrol surface streets from the waterfront to Portland.

It's a long day, and Sims said to be ready for anything.

"Know your traffic flow in and out. Stay hydrated. Eat food. Wear sunscreen. Just because we're showing good weather, you could still get overheated out there if you're not taking care of yourself."

If something does come up and you need to call 911, Sims said it's important to be specific about your location.
