Afghan evacuees arrive in Indianapolis Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, as 1st Cavalry Division soldiers watch. Hoosiers will host the Afghans at Camp Atterbury, near Edinburgh, as they begin their safe resettlement to the United States. Camp Atterbury is one of eight sites in the United States that will receive evacuees from Afghanistan. Officials expect about 1,000 evacuees by the end of the week and there could be as many as 5,000 total.
The refugees will be paired with a sponsor families before they move out.Â
With winter months coming up, the Columbus Police Department is accepting winter clothing donations and hygiene products to help the refugees who are currently housed at Camp Atterbury.
