LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An annual holiday tradition returns to the City of La Grange, Kentucky, and will honor a local hero.

The 38th Annual Light Up La Grange lighting ceremony takes place on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Walnut and Main Streets in downtown La Grange at 5:45 p.m.

This year, Louisville Metro Police Officer Nick Wilt will be honored and is the official "Super Star" who will flip the switch to light up the city, according to the Light Up La Grange website

Officer Nick Wilt was one of the first responding officers to the Old National shooting on April 10, 2023, his fourth-ever shift with LMPD. Wilt was shot in the head and underwent brain surgery at University of Louisville Hospital, leaving him in critical condition for weeks and battling pneumonia.

Wilt continues to recover at home while doing outpatient therapy.

After the lighting ceremony, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on a fire truck about 6 p.m., and children will have a chance to meet and share their lists with the man in red.

The Light Up La Grange festivities kick off on Friday, Dec. 1 with a movie at Southeast Christian Church La Grange campus. Doors open at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, the festivities start with Breakfast with Santa from 7-10 a.m. at the local elementary school. Throughout the day, downtown La Grange will be open for families to shop, explore and eat before the lighting ceremony.
