LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some of Louisville's first responders are answering the call for help as recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene continue in North Carolina.
Two of the city's telecommunication dispatchers were deployed to North Carolina, according to Mayor Craig Greenberg. They joined two other dispatchers from across Kentucky.
"When things happen outside of our area, things of a grand scale that require more resources than other communities may have available, we here in Louisville also want to help," Greenberg said Tuesday.
The initiative ensures that critical communication support is provided in disaster-stricken areas, where effective coordination between emergency teams is crucial for ongoing relief operations.
"Our dispatchers are about halfway through their 14-day mission," Jody Meiman, with Louisville Metro Emergency Services, said. "We're very proud of them. Keep them in your prayers, they'll be traveling back soon."
Officials emphasize that no personnel are sent out to the area unless it has been determined that local services won't be impacted.Â
In addition to the telecommunication dispatchers, 17 members of the Jefferson County Fire Special Operations Team have also been deployed to assist in central Florida ahead of Hurricane Milton.
Both Kentucky and Indiana have also sent crews to assist in recovery efforts, as well as the mobilization of the Kentucky Air National Guard to help with search and recovery.
