LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Construction is underway on the region's first Wawa gas station.

Those driving down Veterans Parkway in Clarksville may have noticed the former Red Robin restaurant had been torn down and construction crews were on site. That's because work is now underway to build southern Indiana's first Wawa location.

Construction is expected to take about nine months and will bring 35-40 new jobs to Clarksville, town officials said Thursday.

The site, which was also home to a Ruby Tuesday's restaurant, sits in front of Lowe's at 1354 Veterans Parkway in Clarksville.

Town officials said Wawa leaders approached them in early 2023 about potentially coming to the area. The company needed to have a zoning variance, which was later approved by the town's Board of Zoning Appeals. The development plan for the location was then approved by the town's Planning Commission.

The Clarksville location is expected to have several gas pumps and up to eight EV charging stations, officials said.

In September 2023, the chain announced several future locations in the Kentuckiana region, including four in Louisville.

The four Louisville locations include:

  • 9650 Preston Crossing Boulevard, near Cooper Chapel Road
  • 7203 Apple Mill Drive, near the intersection with Outer Loop and Vaughn Mill
  • 4213 Bardstown Road, near Fegenbush Lane
  • 12415 Taylorsville Road, near the intersection with Sweeney Lane

Wawa is a popular east coast gas station chain known for its sandwiches and cheap eats.

The chain said it plans to open about 40 stores across the Kentucky region over the next 8-10 years.
