LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A historic hospital project in west Louisville reached a milestone Wednesday.
Norton West Louisville Hospital held a topping off ceremony as the final steel beam was installed. About 500 steel beams and columns, which is about 600 tons of steel, are now in place to support the structure.
Now that construction crews have finished installing all that steel, the project moves on to the next phase of development.
At Broadway and 28th Street, the hospital will be the first new hospital built in west Louisville in well over a century. It's on schedule to admit patients by November 2024.
Crews began pouring concrete at the site of the hospital in April, and the steel structure was put in place in June. The hospital will include a 24/7 emergency department, operating rooms and 20 inpatient beds to start. It will also have primary care doctors, outpatient, specialty services, a retail pharmacy and imaging including X-ray, CT and MRI. Outpatient offices will include adult and pediatric care along with women's services including obstetrics and gynecology. There will also be cardiology, orthopedics, diabetes care and behavioral health services.
Based on community feedback, the hospital will also have a centralized check-in area, community room, outdoor green space and a food pantry. The facility will also feature work from local artists.
"Although it's a beautiful facility, it will also offer everything that we incorporate in our other hospitals," Corenza Townsend, chief administrative officer for the hospital, said Wednesday. "West Louisville is deserving of that."
The hospital is expected to open in late 2024.
