LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thinking of buying or selling a car this summer? July is the peak season for buying and selling used cars.

If you're in the market for one or looking to sell, there are scams to look out for.

One man had an unusual car he decided he wanted to sell - a 1948 Packard. After he posted it on some popular car buying websites, he was surprised to get offers from three potential buyers. One was even very eager, but a little suspicious.

The buyer overnighted a check for more than his asking price, asking him to send part of it to a shipping company. Sure enough, the check came back 10 days later as counterfeit.

To protect yourself, be suspicious of buyers or sellers who don't want to meet. Never cash a check before the sale closes, and never wire or Venmo money to a stranger.
