LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Clark County jail is now accepting federal Immigration & Customs Enforcement detainees.

According to Mark Grube, assistant chief of the Clark County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Scottie Maples "agreed to assist ICE" based on the department's contract with the U.S. Marshals Service "at the request of immigrations and customs."

That agreement allows up to 150 detainees "at the sheriff's discretion." Grube said the jail first started housing detainees last Friday, April 11.

The jail is currently housing 48 detainees, but it's unknown how long they will be kept there. Grube said the length of their stays will be "determined by immigration authorities."

"We are committed to transparency and the fair treatment of all in our custody," Grube said in a statement.

Staffing at the jail has not changed, Grube said, as the necessary space to house the ICE detainees was already available as part of the sheriff's office contract with the U.S. Marshals.
