LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Watches, tailored suits, and guns seized from former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel were sold to the highest bidder Wednesday.
Freije & Freije Auctions retrieved the items from the Indiana State Police post in Sellersburg in late December. Dozens of items were listed on the company's website as part of its annual New Year's Day auction.
"We want to do what’s right by the Indiana taxpayer and the people of Clark County who entrusted officials who, unfortunately, did not serve and protect them," TJ Freije, owner of Freije & Freije Auctions, told WDRB News in December.
The auction house on the far west side of Indianapolis sold most of Noel's guns and a lot of his clothes. One suit jacket had the sheriff emblem as part of its lining and Noel's name was in most of the custom suits, which he paid several thousand dollars for. Many of the suits sold for about $200.
Brian Copper, of Stilesville, Indiana, told WDRB he purchased one of those suits for $200 after bidding on several, and said the winning suit is for his son-in-law.
All items were auctioned off within two hours.
More than a dozen of Noel's suits, some of which he wore in court, along with several pairs of pants all sold for a fraction of their original price, including shoes.
One person said one shoe without a match sold for $110.
Freije & Freije auctions off firearms from around the state each year, and said Noel's guns, more than 150 of them, attracted a lot of attention.
The guns, suits and Rolex watches were sold in less than two hours.
"My wife has been following this story from the beginning and I kind of used it as an excuse to buy a new gun and she gets memorabilia, so I'm happy," said Floyds Knobs resident Scott Gibson.
Gibson said he started bidding online Wednesday morning, and drove two hours north to pick up the shotgun — or a piece of the Noel story.
The proceeds from the auction, which totaled about $93,000, will be allocated toward the $3.1 million Noel owes in restitution. The former sheriff was ordered to pay the restitution after he pleaded guilty to 27 felonies related to fraud and theft. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison this October.
Restitution will be split between the following agencies:
- $2,870,924 to Utica Township Volunteers Firefighters Association (dba New Chapel EMS)
- $173,155.07 to the Indiana Department of Revenue
- $61,190.77 to the Clark County Sheriff's Department
- $35,245.60 to Indiana State Police
The auction started at 10 a.m. New Year's Day in Clayton, Indiana. Online bids were also accepted.
In addition to items seized from Noel, other items are up for auction. The items related to Noel say specifically, "... SELLING ON BEHALF OF CLARK COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT 1 SEIZED DURING THE JAMEY NOEL INVESTIGATION" in the details online.
Vehicles from Noel's extensive car collection weren't part of this auction.
Other property is still being held and can't be put up for auction yet, because it's still relevant in the pending cases of Noel's estranged wife, Misty, and daughter, Kasey.
