LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two weeks after Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Louisville reached a milestone by mailing 500,000 books to children under 5 yeas old in Louisville, educators in Hardin County are encouraging residents to take advantage of the free program.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library mails a free, age-appropriate book each month to children from birth to age five whose families register for the books. Families simply need to sign up for the free books.

Hardin County Schools, Elizabethtown Independent Schools and the Central Kentucky Community Foundation are urging residents to take advantage of the program that has had an impact on the state's literacy rate.

According to data from the Imagination Library, 38% of children in Hardin County eligible to receive the free books are doing so, up from 17% over in recent months.

Community members can support the program by making a donation on the Central Kentucky Community Foundation’s website.
