SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A busy exit in Bullitt County is about to get a big makeover as the first-of-its-kind design in the Louisville area.

This week, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet begins construction on a Double Crossover Diamond interchange where Cedar Grove Road (KY 480) meets I-65.

This design will allow drivers to turn left when exiting or entering a ramp without stopping or crossing opposite lanes of traffic.

KYTC said this type of interchange should reduce vehicle speeds, operate with fewer traffic signals and improve access to the surrounding area.

The interchange is being constructed in an area that has seen a number of warehouses pop up in recent years alongside the existing gas stations and shops.

Emma Maddox is a barista at Cedar Grove Coffee House, which is just off the interstate.

"It (traffic) gets worse by the day as more of those warehouses come up, so it's increased recently," Maddox said.

One of the newer businesses is co-owned by Mary Cortez. She owns Mary's Handmade Southern Sweets, and shares a space with her daughter's business, Wicked Boutique & Freeze Dried Treats.

While she loves the location because of the community, the traffic can be a nightmare.

"It's hard for us to go home, it's hard for people to come to work," Cortez said. "My son works at Gordon's, and it's almost impossible when it's that time and it's all backed up. You're gonna be late."

She relocated to Cedar Grove Road knowing that the construction is coming, and is optimistic about the change.

"We're kind of glad and hope it helps," Cortez said. "If it gets better going through, we'll get more people here."

Maddox said she hopes the construction doesn't impact visits from the regulars who swing by. But is hopeful that once the dust settles, even more will stop in.

"It'll probably be a little inconvenient, but if it's for the greater good, won't be too bad," Maddox said.

Construction is scheduled to be finished by the fall 2025.
