LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Students at Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg can now access free groceries at a new on-campus food pantry.
The college recently opened Ivy Market in partnership with Kroger Company Jay C Food Stores. Instead of handing out prepacked food, the pantry lets students grab a shopping cart, browse the shelves and choose the groceries they need.
The market is stocked with fresh and refrigerated foods, pantry staples and other essentials, along with paper and reusable shopping bags.
School officials said the goal is to help students facing food insecurity by making basic necessities easier to access.
"We're not just an institution that provides education, but we really want to treat the student holistically," said Tyiana Thompson, Ivy Tech's vice chancellor of student affairs. "We want to be able to provide them every opportunity to be successful in the classroom, and sometimes that means extra needs like food."
The Ivy Market food pantry is open to all students at the Sellersburg campus.
