LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is giving families tools for responsible gun ownership.

The sheriff's office is launching a countywide gun lock giveaway.

There will be free gun locks available to pick up at each of the department's vehicle inspection locations. It's part of a program that aims to improve firearm safety and prevent accidental shootings involving children.

It comes as a response to the recent deaths of two local teens. The sheriff's office said a 14-year-old boy died last month and a 15-year-old boy died last week, and that their deaths could have been prevented.

"A gun lock is simple, but it creates a barrier to prevent a child from being able to use a firearm or accidentally discharge a firearm," Col. Steve Healey, chief deputy, said.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the sheriff's office and Miss Heartland, a gun safety advocate.

The gun locks will also be distributed at community events.
