LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The attorney for a woman charged with shooting and killing her ex-boyfriend near the Highlands earlier this month claims she is actually a victim.

Lanesha Blakey, 28, was arrested April 28 and charged with murder and assault in connection with the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Bryant Johnson on April 20 on Bardstown Road.

That's when LMPD officers responded to a reported shooting on Bardstown Road at the intersection with Baxter Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Officers arrived to find two crashed vehicles.

Johnson was found inside one of the vehicles with a gunshot wound. Police said he had been shot nearby before he got into his car and drove "a short distance" before crashing into the other car. He was taken to UofL Health Hospital, where he died a short time later. The person in the other vehicle was not seriously injured.

In addition to murder, Blakey is also charged with assault after she allegedly hit a woman in the face with a gun before the shooting.

During Blakey's arraignment on April 29, her attorney requested her bond be reduced from $75,000. In making the request, he told the judge there is "evidence that she was a victim here. Beyond that, she turned herself in. When we learned of the charges, we contacted both the county, the commonwealth, and the detectives involved."

The attorney noted that Blakey has strong family ties in the community, with no criminal history other than traffic violations, and a solid 7-year work record at Ford.

The judge agreed to reduce Blakey's bond from $75,000 to $50,000 cash. If she posts bond, she will be required to remain under house arrest with a work release to attend her job.

Blakey's next court appearance is scheduled for May 7.
