LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- National Merit Scholarship winners were announced Wednesday, including 20 from the Louisville area.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced more than 2,900 winners. The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. High school juniors entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, according to a news release.

Last fall, more than 16,000 semifinalists were named on a state-representational basis. Semifinalists were the highest-scoring program entrants in each state. Semifinalists had to advance to the finalist level of competition by fulfilling additional requirements, like submitting a detailed scholarship application, including a written essay and providing extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions. Semifinalists also had to have an outstanding academic record, according to a news release.
