LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Baseball returned to Slugger Field for the spring on Friday night in front of 9,299 fans.

The Louisville Bats defeated the Indianapolis Indians 9-8 as the Triple-A baseball teams began the 2024 season. This year marks the Bats' 25th year in the ballpark.

The Triple-A affiliate for the Cincinnati Reds rallied from a four-run deficit, scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Hernan Perez and Rece Hinds each hit solo home runs, while Blake Dunn and P.J. Higgins both drove in two runs. 

Nick Gonzales hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Trailing by four runs in the fourth inning, Perez hit a solo home run. 

Francisco Urbaez and Dunn drove in runs in the fifth inning to bring the Bats within a run, at 5-4. 

After Indianapolis scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, Louisville answered. Hinds hit a home run and Hurtubise singled to bring home two runs and tie the game.  

Later in the inning, Higgins drove in Hurtubise and Perez to give the Bats a 9-7 lead. All nine Louisville starters reached base. 

There was a $1 beer Happy Hour promotion and fireworks after the game. 

It was the second straight year the Bats have won their home opener. The win also marked the Bats' first season-opening win since 2014.
