LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jordan Wells, 23, was shot and killed while walking down the street near Daisy Kastle last year.
Over a year later, his family is honoring him by holding the "Fill the Wells" blood drive.
Wells received more than 119 units of blood in his three weeks at University of Louisville Hospital. His mom, Kristie Hillard, says if it wasn't for those units of blood, she wouldn't have gotten her last few days with him.
"It saves lives and it's something that you can do to honor Jordan, to honor your loved one or just it's something we can do while we're still alive," Hillard said.
Hillard said when they were at the hospital, they saw how much blood he was receiving and wanted to make a difference in other people's lives. That's why she helped create this blood drive with UofL Health.
She says the blood he received helped him in his final week, and they were able to say their goodbyes.
"We were able to exchange I love you's and just tell him how proud we were of him," Hillard said.
UofL RN Reem Ahmed sees those lives being saved firsthand every day. She took care of Wells from the time he was admitted, to his final moments.
"It's so special because we know that someone helped him and now, we're helping someone just like him," Ahmed said.
Even though Wells is no longer with us, his mom says he's still giving back.
"This is his legacy, and this is what he's going to do, he's going to continue to give, we're not going to let evil win," Hillard said.
To donate blood, you can schedule an appointment with the American Red Cross online.
