LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A memorial ceremony was held honoring a Louisville police officer who lost his life in the line of duty.

LMPD officer Peter Grignon was investigating a hit-and-run on March 23, 2005, arriving on scene of an early morning crash. He found a suspect's vehicle burning nearby. Moment's later, Officer Grignon was confronted by two subjects and shot twice.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died a short time later. Grignon had been with LMPD for two years.

"It's been 20 years but you are always with us," LMPD posted

On Sunday, dozens of people attended an annual memorial at Cave Hill Cemetery.

"I want to thank all of you for being here," said Rebecca Grignon-Reker, his widow. "You are the family Peter left me with and I am so very grateful for each and every one of you. You have impacted my life and the life of my family in ways you will never know."

Every year, community members gather at his grave to remember Grignon and his sacrifice.
