School lockers, hallway (generic)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear signed a new law to crack down on violence in schools.

Senate Bill 101 requires districts to expel middle and high school students for up to a year if they assault teachers or staff.

The legislation expands that punishment to incidents at bus stops, and increases penalties for school employees who fail to report violence.

Lawmakers added a path for some expelled students to return early, under strict conditions in the bill.

Supporters say the law protects educators, while critics warn it could push vulnerable students out of the system.

The law takes effect immediately.
