LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new report revealed thousands of people across Louisville regularly struggle to pay their utility bills.

The 2025 report by the Metropolitan Housing Coalition analyzed the impact of rising energy and water bills for Louisvillians.

The Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance said the highest energy burdens are in central and west Louisville where the energy use intensity is up to three times higher than in other areas.

The research showed low-income residents and communities of color are disproportionately affected.

As for the cost of water, Louisville ranks in the top 20 most expensive metro areas in the nation for water-related expenses.

"This report is more timely than ever as all Louisvillians, and all Kentuckians across the Commonwealth, are experiencing increases in housing and utility costs–and, in general, a more volatile economic situation," Tony Curtis, the executive director of MHC, said in a news release. “If we are going to tackle the affordability issue head-on, we cannot continue to pursue a status quo approach by tinkering around the edges. Complex issues require bold action and new ideas from a coalition of community partners. The time is now to take decisive action and this report provides pathways to accomplish these goals.”
