LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Tuesday marked the third anniversary of the deadly tornadoes that hit western Kentucky as families continue to rebuild their lives.

The storm left 81 people dead and destroyed hundreds of homes when it tore through the western Kentucky area in December 2021, just weeks before Christmas.

In Mayfield, a tornado slammed into a candle factory with more than 100 people still inside, killing nine people and leveling the building. Twenty-four people died in Graves County from the tornado. The candle factory has since been rebuilt in Hickory, just 10 minutes from Mayfield.

In Taylor County, 70 families were displaced by the storms. In Dawson Springs, 14 people were killed when the tornado devastated the small town, destroying 65-70% of the community's homes and buildings.

In Warren County, a total of 17 people were killed in the storm that left behind destruction in Bowling Green. In total, 3,778 homes, 183 businesses and 103 buildings were destroyed.

"Today we remember the precious lives taken — each one a child of God — who will forever be missed by their loved ones. But my faith teaches me that we will see them again," Gov. Andy Beshear said in a news release. "Today, we also take time to thank those who have worked tirelessly over the years to help rebuild lives, homes and communities. We are rebuilding stronger because of the love and compassion you've shown your neighbors."

With the help of the Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund, more than 221 homes have been built, repaired or are under construction since 2021.
