USPS tells customers it's 'taking action' amid reports of more mail delays in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The U.S. Postal Service recently sent out an alert to customers about delays at the Louisville Processing and Distribution Center.

The alert comes as residents report mail delays are back as the holiday shopping season ramps up.

Employees at the Gardiner Lane facility continue to share photos and videos showing bins filled with mail and letters piled along hallways inside the processing and distribution center. While mail volume typically increases during the holiday season, employees said the backlog started much earlier this year. Several said the post office began falling behind even before Thanksgiving.

Last Friday morning, semi trucks were seen lined up outside the building, backing up traffic as drivers waited to load and unload.

The new alert tells customers the post office is taking action, including extra transportation to delivery units, rerouting and increased leadership resources.

Thursday, Congressman Morgan McGarvey said he's trying to prevent a repeat of last year's delays.

McGarvey sent a letter to the U.S. Postmaster General after he heard from what he called an alarming number of people who said they're not getting their bills, medicine or mail on time.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General audited the distribution center and branches at Iroquois Station, Middletown and Pleasure Ridge Park. The federal audit found more than 100,000 pieces of mail had been delayed at the Gardiner Lane facility and documented staffing shortages, missed scans and late dispatches.
