LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Friday marked three years since a Louisville teen was killed by a drunk driver on Dixie Highway.
Madelynn Troutt was a senior at Butler High School before her life was cut short when she was killed in a car crash caused by an alleged drunk driver. Her family said she loved cheerleading, was a friend to every person she came in contact with, and planned to study nursing at Bellarmine after graduation.
After her death, Madelynn's family created a memorial scholarship in her name for future students who want to pursue a similar career path.
Troutt's family held a private memorial for friends and family at Cornerstone Community Church in her honor Friday night.
"Helping others is what she wanted, so we're going to try to help other people, and if everyone in her life, or who knows her name, helps one person, then her legacy is living on," Madelynn's mother, Marcie Troutt, said.
The Troutt family sued the Bail Project after the Louisville Chapter helped the driver of the vehicle, Michael DeWitt, bail out of jail just days after the crash.
Police said DeWitt was under the influence when he got behind the wheel of the vehicle, which was stolen. A grand jury indicted him in October 2021. He's scheduled to go to trial in June.
