LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A group of Louisville second-graders got new bike helmets Tuesday in recognition of Brain Injury Awareness Month.

Nearly 80 students at Frayser Elementary School in Louisville were fitted for the helmets after a short presentation about bike safety.

"You need to wear a helmet so you can think and you don't have brain damage," said Oliee Lilliewood, a second-grader at Frayser.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, biking leads to the highest number of traumatic brain injuries, especially among children. Wearing a helmet can significantly reduce that risk.

"It's really important that we get out and educate young kids about bike safety ... (and) the importance of brain injury and the recovery process," said Misty Agne, manager of rehab services at UofL Health.

The Frazier Rehab Institute and the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky donated the helmets.
