LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is in the infancy stage of creating a bypass to alleviate some traffic through Glendale as construction at the Blue Oval SK battery plant carries on.

KYTC said a 2023 study indicated a northeast Glendale Bypass as a high priority to route traffic from the north along KY 1136 (New Glendale Road) to KY 222 and the plant, without using the two state roads' intersection.

Following that, KYTC has created a proposal consisting of three options to add a northeast connector.

"All alternatives would construct a new two-lane route northeast of town between Mud Splash Road and KY 1136 and include a 10-foot-wide shared-use path on the southern side. Alternative 1, which utilizes a curb and gutter section, would also include a sidewalk along the north," KYTC said. "Each alternative would include a series of roundabouts to calm traffic and provide safe connections to the local network and businesses. Representative alignments are shown here, click the links below to review more detailed preliminary plans of each."

The transportation cabinet hosted a meeting to explain its proposal to the public on Tuesday.

"We have to find a way to deal with the traffic with that new plant and so you know just the best plan they can come up is what we have to support," Hardin County resident Richard Parrish said.

A construction date has not been set at this time. The project must still go through its design and environmental processes, as well as right-of-way and utility phases.

BlueOval SK's first battery plant is on track to open in 2025, while its second facility has paused any future production due to uncertainty about electric vehicle demands.

Construction on building two is continuing.

This plan is different from a proposal brought forth by KYTC last year, which would have forced several homeowners to sell their homes to the state through right-of-way acquisition.

KYTC later said the proposal was not recommended because it was "met with substantial public opposition largely related to the potential for residential relocations."
