LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man has been arrested in connection with the search for a 15-month-old led by Shively police Tuesday.

The child was found safe, but now the father has been charged.

According to court documents, 25-year-old Darius Calloway picked up his child at day care Tuesday. In his arrest citation, police said that worried the child's mother, who went to Calloway's home to get the 15-month-old.

That's when police say Calloway and another person started shooting at her car.

Police said her car was hit multiple times, but she managed to drive away without getting shot herself.

When Shively police issued the safety alert for the toddler on Tuesday, court records show Calloway went to the police department and said he never fired a weapon. Instead, he claimed he was being shot at by people he didn't know and his car was also damaged.

But police didn't buy it, charging Calloway with wanton endangerment, assault and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

He appeared in arraignment court Wednesday morning, where his bond was set at $100,000.

Court documents indicate Calloway was likely about to head back to prison for the March 2021 death of Savon Murphey. The 20-year-old was shot and killed outside Wing Station in Shively. Two others were hurt in the shooting.

Calloway was arrested on a murder charge and two counts of assault in connection with the shooting.

Police allege Calloway shot Murphey as he went inside the restaurant, according to an arrest citation. Murphey stumbled outside of the restaurant, and Calloway continued firing as he followed him, the citation says.

Calloway claimed self defense in the shooting. As the case played out through the court system, the murder charge was amended down to reckless homicide, and Calloway was given diversion and supervised release.

On July 17, Calloway pleaded guilty to drug trafficking in a separate case. While he hadn't been sentenced yet, the court record is clear the drug conviction would remove him from the diversion program he got after the homicide.
