LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police said Wednesday a new policing approach is bringing violent crime numbers down.

There have been 93 homicides so far this year, LMPD said, compared to 124 homicides this time last year. That's a 25% drop over the past year.

Non-fatal shootings have also seen a 25% decrease from last year, and LMPD said carjackings are down 33% compared to last year.

The department has also taken 250 illegal guns off the streets so far in 2025.

"This proactive policing is what is making a real impact in our violent crime driving numbers, getting those guns off the street driving those homicides down, driving those non-fatal shootings down," LMPD Deputy Chief Emily McKinley said.

LMPD also talked about the launch of the Tri-City Police Academy, an initiative among LMPD and the police departments in Nashville and Knoxville. It's aimed at strengthening regional law enforcement by sharing best practices, building cross-agency partnerships and learning from nationally-recognized instructors.
