LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Salem, Indiana, man was arrested and charged with false informing after police said he faked his own death to get out of paying child support.
Indiana State Police said in April 2024 a detective met with the Washington County Child Support Administrator after she received an email saying Jeffrey Lynn Bell Jr. passed away.
Bell owed a large amount of child support that would then go unpaid. ISP was told that Bell was still allegedly living in Washington County with his girlfriend.
ISP visited his home and found Bell then charged him with false informing and gave him a court date.
Bell appeared virtually Jan. 23 in the Washington County Circuit Court after saying he was out of state.
During the online court proceedings, officials believed he was still at home and visited him while the meeting was ongoing.
Bell was found at his Washington County residence then ordered to be taken into custody and to his courtroom
He's been initially charged with three counts of failing to appear, one court of false informing and one court of contempt of court.
He's being held on a $100,000 bond for the false informing charge and without bond for two of the failure to appear charges and the contempt charge.
Bell is also held on a $500 bond for one of the failure to appear charges.
