LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville has seen nearly as many police shootings in 2023 as the last two years combined.

In 2021, the first full year after the Breonna Taylor protest, Louisville Metro Police shot six people. Of those six, three died.

In 2022, LMPD officers shot three people. One person died.

This year, police have been involved in eight shootings. Two people have died as a result.

The police shooting Thursday wasn't only the eighth in the city in 2023, but the third in five weeks.

In February, police shot Candy Basil in Valley Station. They said she was "holding and waving" a gun in the street. Police said they gave her several commands to drop the weapon, and she didn't.

The next day, an officer shot two teenagers. LMPD said the shooting was accidental. Police were tracking down what they said was a stolen car. A garage door opened, and several teens ran out. The officer fired as they ran.

In June, an undercover officer shot and killed Mark Jaggers Jr. The officer said Jaggers was trying to carjack him.

Body camera footage from the shooting showed a masked man approach the police car. A brief frame shows him pull out a gun and the officer shouts "police" before shooting him. Police tried to provide medical aid, but Jaggers died at the hospital.

In August, a man shot at police in the Clifton neighborhood. Officers fired back, killing him.

The next month, LMPD officer Brandon Haley was ambushed while getting out of his car while pursuing suspects in the Chickasaw neighborhood. Haley shot back, but officer Colin Billotto pulled him to safety. Several people were indicted in the case. Haley is now recovering at home.

Little more than a month ago, police said a rookie officer shot a convicted felon who had an "AR-15 style pistol." Police said Jaron Bobbitt had the gun in his car. They said he began waving it at officers, and after asking him to drop it police shot him. LMPD said Bobbitt told them after the shooting that the gun was a toy, but it was actually real and loaded.

Last Friday night, police shot a man they said refused to drop his gun after running from a traffic stop near Churchill Downs. Police said they had pulled over a car at 4th and Central when the passenger, Marvin Smith, got out of the vehicle and ran from officers with a gun.

Police told him to drop the gun several times but he didn't. Body camera footage of that shooting has not yet been released. LMPD releases body camera footage from police shootings within 10 days of a shooting.

Body camera footage of Thursday night's shooting also hasn't been released. One person was killed and another sent to the hospital in critical condition.
