SEYMOUR, Ind. (WDRB) — An 18-year-old man is facing attempted murder charges after police say he opened fire inside the Jackson County Public Library in Seymour on Wednesday afternoon.
According to investigators, Emiliano Cuevas-Bravo entered the library and fired a single shot from a long gun through a glass door. A library employee was injured by shattered glass but is expected to recover. Authorities said a bystander tackled Cuevas-Bravo and held him down until officers arrived.
Police later learned that Cuevas-Bravo had initially gone to Seymour High School, reportedly intending to target a school resource officer. The school and other area campuses were briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution. No students were injured.
Residents say the shooting has left the tight-knit community shaken.
“It is very crazy and stuff like that does not happen here in Seymour,” said Kyia Esteb, who lives nearby. “We need to feel safe. We need our kids and everybody here safe.”
WDRB visited Cuevas-Bravo’s last known address in search of more information. A man identifying himself as the suspect’s father confirmed the relationship but declined to comment further.
Cuevas-Bravo is currently being held at the Jackson County Jail. He faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. His initial court hearing has not yet been scheduled.
