LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Metro United Way just got a financial boost to help address transportation barriers for students in need.
The $125,000 grant comes from Ford Philanthropy. A portion of the funding, $82,000, will go directly to Bullitt County Public Schools' McKinney Vento Program, which helps students experiencing homelessness.
The remainder of the grant will support more transportation efforts in the community. That includes the purchase of a van and hiring of a part-time driver for BluePrint502, a Louisville program providing education, job training and leadership programs to youth living in communities with fewer resources.
Metro United Way said transportation barriers are among the top reasons students miss school, struggle with academics or are unable to participate in extracurricular activities.
"Our community is facing several challenges around transportation," Adria Johnson, president and CEO of Metro United Way, said in a news release Monday.
Johnson said the funding will allow the nonprofit and its community partners to better support students who need help with transportation by providing needed resources, such as gas cards for students.
