LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in Elizabethtown issued a scam alert to help residents protect their money.
The Elizabethtown Police Department said in one case, a local man got a virus pop-up on his computer and called a fake "Microsoft Support" number.
The scammers got access to his computer, stole banking information, and connected him to a fake person claiming to be from his bank's fraud department.
They convinced him to withdraw $20,000 and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM. Days later, he lost about $20,000 and the criminals kept calling, insisting the bank was scamming him.
Police said you should never call the number on pop-up warnings, and banks will never ask you to deposit money in crypto ATMs.
