LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Crews broke ground Thursday morning during a public ceremony at the Kentucky Humane Society's new campus.
The new KHS Animal & Community Campus will be located on more than 5 acres of land on Orchard Avenue, off Preston Highway. It will replace the nonprofit's current facilities.
The plans call for a 54,000-square-foot facility with 7,000 square feet of covered outdoor space.

Leaders said the new campus is "designed to save more lives, serve more families, and strengthen communities" across the city and state.Â
"We are celebrating hope," KHS CEO Alisa Gray said. "We are celebrating what is possible when a community comes together and says 'We are all in for the animals, for families, and for the future of Louisville and the commonwealth.'"
Services at the new clinic will include a low-cost veterinary clinic, a 30% increase in housing for cats and dogs and flexible emergency housing for animals rescued from large-scale cruelty or neglect cases, or natural disasters.
Additionally, KHS said the new campus will bring most staff and services under one roof "for the first time." It will also include public education spaces and community outreach rooms and resources, as well as an expanded CARE-a-van program to reach more communities.
The organization needs to raise $37 million for the project. So far, they have around $27 million in the bank from its capital All In Campaign, the largest in its history. A gift of $500,000 was announced during Thursday's ceremony, courtesy of the KHS Board. KHS hopes the community will help double the investment. The project is expected to be finished by summer 2027.
