LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A mother and daughter killed in a crash five years ago were inducted into the Catholic Sports Hall of Fame Monday.
Carrie McCaw and her daughter Kacey died in a crash on their way to a volleyball tournament in St. Louis on Feb. 14, 2020. Lesley Prather, a Louisville firefighter, and her daughter, Rhyan, were with them and also died in that crash.
Carrie McCaw was a multi-sport athlete at St. Raphael and Assumption High School. She then played volleyball at Syracuse, eventually becoming an assistant coach there before moving back to Louisville to coach several club teams.
Kacey McCaw also played at St. Raphael.
Their family said this honor is bittersweet.
"Obviously we wish they were here and able to accept this award on their own behalf, but we're just glad that they're getting recognized for their accomplishments in general," Brady McCaw, their son and brother said.
"They're definitely well-deserving of it, you know, some of the most incredible athletes that I've ever watched play," Ty McCaw, son, said. "I just remember watching some of my mom's highlights from college, and Kacey live, it's just unreal to see what they did and them being recognized for their greatness too."
There were seven other inductees. Carrie and Kacey McCaw are the first mother-daughter team to be inducted together since the hall of fame started.
