Chelynda Howlett was arrested by officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, for the Oct. 2, 2021 murder of Poncho Young.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing a man at an Okolona hotel nearly four years ago.Ā 

Chelynda Howlett was charged with murder, burglary, tampering with physical evidence and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon in the death of 40-year-old Poncho Young. LMPD officers responding to reports of a break-in at the InTown Suites at 7121 Preston Highway on Oct. 2, 2021, found Young dead in one of the rooms with a gunshot wound.

Howlett was arrested nearly a year later, on Dec. 5, 2022.Ā 

In a plea deal, the murder charge was amended to reckless homicide, and Howlett pleaded guilty to the remaining charges on June 18, 2025.Ā 

Howlett will be eligible for parole after serving 20% of her sentence, according to court documents.Ā
